WRGA: Fire Marshal says Floyd County Jail has 30 days to fix problems or move inmates

From WRGA: A fire inspector has told Floyd County sheriff’s officials this week they have 30 days to come up with a plan to fix deficiencies or they will revoke the jail’s occupancy certificate.
Sheriff Tim Burkhalter said that would mean that all of the inmates would be housed at other facilities, at a cost of about $750,000 a month. These are problems Burkhalter said he has brought to the commission and discussed to the point of exhaustion.
“Locks that won’t lock, doors that won’t stay locked basically,” Burkhalter said. “And fire alarms in the control room that will not reset.”
A special purpose, local option sales tax approved by voters in 2013 provides funding to address the jail locks. The project is expected to be completed in a few weeks. Burkhalter said he felt like the problems could be addressed within the 30-day time frame. According to the fire safety report, a review of the complete plan of correction will be conducted on April 10.
