WRGA: PFC David McGuire named Rome Police Officer of the Year, other department honors
From WRGA: PFC David McGuire has been named the Rome City Police Department Officer of the Year. McGuire was honored during Monday’s Rome City Commission meeting.
McGuire, who has been with the department since 1995, was recognized for his actions on July the 11th of last year, when he helped defuse volatile situation. A man had barricaded himself in a home and was refusing to let his family leave. The man had access to weapons, further complicating the situation. McGuire was able to talk the man into letting police inside the home where the situation was brought to a quick and peaceful end.
Also Monday, the Rome Police Department was recognized for achieving accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.Chief Louis Dekmar with CALEA said there are 18,000 police agencies in the United States and less than a thousand are accredited.
The Rome PD had to meet 482 standards for advanced accreditation. Dekmar added that nationally, police use force in 3-percent of their arrests. For Rome, it’s less than 1-percent of the time.
Two civilian employees with the Rome Police Department were also recognized Monday night. Mina Coleman and Sue West were named the Civilian Employees of the Year. Both Coleman and West volunteered to work overtime, without pay, during a recent shortage of civilian employees at the police department.
