Today, Tuesday: Blood Assurance will be hosting a St. Patrick’s Day blood drive its donor center facility at the Midtown Crossing shopping center in Rome. All participating donors will receive a customized St. Patrick’s Day t-shirt and will be entered into a drawing to win a $50 Walmart gift card, as well as a gift card from Provino’s Italian Restaurant. With numerous blood drives and donor appointments cancelled due to last month’s weather conditions, there has been a dramatic drop in blood donations. The community is experiencing an urgent need for O- and O+ blood donors. Blood Assurance invites all “lucky” donors to consider making a donation that will save three lives across the region. To be eligible to donate blood, you must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with parental consent), weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good health. Donors are asked to drink plenty of fluids – avoiding caffeine – and eat a meal that is rich in iron prior to donating. For questions about donating blood, please call (423) 756-0966. Thursday: Tickets are still available for the Berry College Gloria Shatto Lecture Series featuring presidential historian and Pulitzer prize-winning author Doris Kearns Goodwin. The lecture will begin at 8 p.m. in the Steven J. Cage Athletic and Recreation Center. It is free and open to the public, but tickets are required for admission. Thursday: U.S. Rep. Tom Graves will present the 2015 Congressional Youth Art competition winners during a reception at 6 p.m. the Rockmart Cultural Arts Center, 316 N. Piedmont Ave., Bldg. 300. Refreshments will be served and admission is free. There were 68 entries from the 14th District of Georgia. Rep. Graves will announce the winners of the competition with first, second, third and honorable mentions awarded. The first prize work of art will represent the 14th Congressional District in an exhibition in Washington, D.C. for one year.
Thursday-Saturday: The 239th Big Fibbers Storytelling Festival, featuring America’s favorite fibber Bil Lepp, will be held March 19-21 at Berry College. The three-day storytelling event will offer four performances to include stories from champion fibbers, adult fibbers and youth fibbers in addition to the Big Fibbers contest and storytelling workshop.
