Smile Report: Saint Mary’s Cameron Pickens earns second place in North Georgia contest honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Media release: Cameron Pickens, a third grade student at Saint Mary’s Catholic School, won second place overall in an archdiocesan-wide elementary school contest honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The Archdiocese of Atlanta includes 15 elementary schools in Atlanta and North Georgia.
The 2015 theme for the annual contest was a gospel verse from the Book of Matthew: “Come to me, all you that are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
Cameron’s poster depicted children holding up a world surrounded by hunger, war, poverty, sickness, and fear, and guiding it toward a cross promising unity, peace, hope, promise, salvation, and love.
Each second- through fifth-grade student at Saint Mary’s School submitted a poster for the contest. Cameron’s poster was selected by school principal John Tarpley and sent on to the archdiocesan-level contest. Besides winning second place at that level, Cameron was also awarded third place honors in the Chancery’s Choice division.
