Members of the Americanism Committee of the Exchange Club of Rome visited East Central Elementary School’s 571 students on Monday morning, Feb. 9, to make a special presentation to the students, faculty and staff. East Central was named one of three schools to receive the Proudly We Hail Award given by the Exchange Club of Rome for proper display, care and respect for the American flag. Following the presentation, the school chorus sang the Star Spangled Banner, with students and principal, Parke Wilkinson, accepting the award. It was an excellent way to begin the school day and demonstrate good citizenship. Members of the Exchange Club’s Americanism Committee once again had the opportunity to pass our American heritage from one generation to the next. The student’s shared their pride in our country, their school, and our community by properly flying the American flag on a continuing basis.

This year the Exchange Club nominated 29 flags for competition to win the Proudly We Hail Award. The club then sent out a team from their Americanism Committee to visit each of the 29 sites to find flags that are clean, untattered, flown on a regular basis and if flown during the hour of darkness are properly illuminated. Final selections are determined and winners selected for residential flags, flags flown at businesses, government facilities and schools. Of the 29 nominees, nine have been selected as winners of this year’s award competition.

  • Residential winners are: The Village at Maplewood and Mr. & Mrs. Steve Jones.
  • Business winners are: Checkers Restaurant and Coosa Country Club.
  • Government winners are: The Forum and City of Rome Public Works for the flag on Jackson Hill.
  • School winners are: East Central Elementary School, Model Middle School and Pepperell Elementary School.

Each of these winners will receive a framed Proudly We Hail certificate to be awarded at the Feb. 20 luncheon meeting of the Exchange Club at the Palladium on the Coosa Valley Fairgrounds. Two of the schools, East Central Elementary and Pepperell Elementary, requested the Proudly We Hail Award be presented earlier in order that the entire school could participate. Their presentations took place on Feb. 9, 2015
