Media release: Redmond Regional Medical Center honored three individuals as the hospital’s 2014 Frist Humanitarian Award Recipients: Dr. Mike Ware, Harbin Clinic Cardiologist - Physician Recipient; Carol Campbell, RN Cardiology Clinical Navigator - Employee Recipient; and Wanda Touchstone - Volunteer Recipient.

The Frist Humanitarian Awards were created to recognize one physician, one employee and one volunteer all on staff at Redmond who demonstrate extraordinary concern for the welfare and happiness of patients and their community. The Frist Humanitarian Awards are given annually in recognition of the humanitarian spirit and philanthropic work of the late Dr. Thomas Frist Sr., a founder of Hospital Corporation of America (HCA).

Adding to these Awards of Distinction is the new Excellence in Nursing Award which recognizes the intrinsic value of nursing practice in accomplishing the company mission of providing the highest quality of care to the patients and communities we serve. This year’s recipient of the Excellence in Nursing Award is Sherry Wright, RN and Wound Care Nurse. National recipients will be honored at a reception in the spring. These awards are the highest honors given to an employee, nurse, volunteer and physician at HCA.

Dr. Mike Ware, Harbin Clinic Cardiologist, was recognized as a physician known throughout Redmond for his outstanding clinical skills as well as for his compassionate, kind, and humble ways. Dr. Ware joined Harbin Clinic in 1989 specializing in Interventional Cardiology and Electrophysiology. He is loved by patients and staff. The answer to a phone call, whether day or night, or even after just returning home from the hospital at 3am, is always the same kind soft spoken words: “I’m on the way.” His humanitarian efforts extend even beyond his own patients. He is a conservationist of land and wildlife. He hires high-school students during summer months to work on his farm and learn skills. He also shares his crops with many throughout the community. Always supportive of fundraising efforts (but quietly, behind the scenes), Dr. Ware made a significant donation in 2005 to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. Close to home, he quietly was instrumental in fundraising for the wedding of an employee in need. The day after the wedding, the new bride was diagnosed with breast cancer and fought the disease for five years. Once again, Dr. Ware stepped in and offered his farm to host a large benefit fundraiser to help pay medical expenses for the couple and another couple in need. Stories like these go on, and on. As a physician to many and a friend to all, the love and respect for Dr. Mike Ware is truly overwhelming.

Carol Campbell, RN takes her role as Redmond’s Cardiology Clinical Navigator to a whole new level. She serves as the direction liaison between the cardiac patients and the cardiologists – and her patients have access to her 24/7. She puts her work and dedication to her patients above herself – even going without heat for a while rather than taking time away from her patients to meet the repairman. In additional to all of her clinical work, Carol also cares for her mother who has been sick since 2010 and for her step-father who has Alzheimer’s. She does everything from grocery shopping, picking up medicines, taking them to doctor’s appointments and more. Carol truly views her family as well as her patients and co-workers as her community.

Redmond Wound Care Nurse, Sherry Wright, received the Excellence in Nursing Award for her professionalism and compassion. Sherry “always works behind the scenes” and is a strong advocate for exceptional patient care. Always the team player, Sherry helps everyone in need – patient, family, nurses, doctors, techs and more. Sherry is known for going the extra mile for her patients, assisting them as needed even after they’ve been discharged from the hospital. Sherry is also known as a “fixer.” She always presents innovative ideas to solve problems and has been instrumental in writing policies and developing education materials for staff.

Redmond Volunteer Wanda Touchstone was recognized as a dedicated volunteer who truly went above and beyond in 2014. Wanda originally volunteered one day a week, primarily assisting the Pharmacy Department. However, when the Human Resources Department (already a small department) had one of their own out over several weeks – Wanda not only stepped in to help on the first day. She came back many other days to help. Without hesitation, she quickly stepped in to answer phones, help with filing, copy forms and so much more. She became a member of the department. According to the Human Resources Department. “We wouldn’t have made it without Wanda!”

“We are extremely proud to recognize Dr. Mike Ware Harbin Clinic Cardiologist, Carol Campbell, Sherry Wright, and Wanda Touchstone for their efforts on behalf of our patients and our community,” said John Quinlivan, Chief Executive Officer of Redmond Regional Medical Center. “They truly exemplify the humanitarian spirit for which Dr. Frist was so well known and is so fondly remembered. I know he’d be proud of them as are we.”
