Raymond A. Holloway, Dec. 25, 1930-Feb. 26, 2015
Raymond Allison Holloway, age 84, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 26, 2015 following a brief illness. Raymond was born in Gadsden, AL on Christmas day, December 25, 1930 to the late Ross Holloway and Annie Miller Holloway. After serving in the army during the Korean War, he was hired by Georgia Kraft in 1954 to help start up the paper mill in Rome, Ga.
He married the love of his life Gwendolyn Sue Cloninger Holloway on Nov. 26, 1956. They moved to Rome in 1958 where he continued his employment as electrician with the paper mill until he retired in 1993. Raymond was a faithful member of Shorter Avenue Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and a trustee. Raymond was a born again Christian, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a role model to all who knew him. He was an avid fan of Atlanta Braves baseball and Alabama Crimson Tide football. He loved the outdoors and nature’s tranquil beauty. Camping in the Great Smoky Mountains, driving along shady, narrow, winding mountain roads and the serenity of cascading waterfalls and trickling mountain streams were his passion. He loved to work with power tools in his shop and was always willing to help everyone. He was known to many as “the flower man” because of the beautiful flower garden in his yard.
Raymond was preceded in death by his wife Gwen, his daughter Susan Holloway Carney, and a sister Kathryne Holloway Kuntz. He is survived by three siblings: Jo Holloway Ashley of Arab, AL, Alfred (Jewelyn) Holloway of Decatur, AL and Charles Holloway of English, IN. Three children survive: Steve (Lori) Holloway of Rome, Ga., Carol (Rex) Carter of Shannon, Ga., Mark E. (Lynn) Holloway of Summerville, 6 grandchildren: Mark A. (Jennifer) Holloway, Brian Carter, Christy Carter, Joshua (Erica) Holloway, Evan Holloway and Allison Holloway, 5 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
