Cabela’s continues to hire some of the 140 full-time, part-time and seasonal positions for its Fort Oglethorpe store opening this spring (careers). The outdoors giant, which opened a megastore in Acworth last year, has targeted a spring opening of the smaller, 70,000-square-foot store in Catoosa County near the intersection of Interstate 75 and Ga. 146. It looks ready to open at this time; we have notes into the company for an updated schedule. The Acworth store, meanwhile, continues to boom. The parking lot was jammed again at noon Sunday … We’re watching and waiting for the other outdoors player in Northwest Georgia, Bass Pro Shop. It has a 100,000s-square-store planned for LakePoint Sporting Community with an opening expected in early 2016.

A fight to the end: Give Bill Pelfrey credit for fighting until the final bell. The longtime retailer, primarily know for World Hi-Fi fame, made about every more possible to keep retail traffic coming into the center at 1600 Shorter Ave. As the business climate changed from 2008, Pelfrey continue to make adjustments — opening a separate bedding store, reducing other retail and focusing on Recliners of Rome and More, and finally with an antique mall inside World Centre Market. Pelfrey retired on Saturday after 42 years in business. He plans to stay in the area and pursue some other options. The listing with Garden Lakes/Steve Miller

Tomlinson expanded the Coosa Valley footprint: There were hints of change in the invitation we received to the “Fins Up” annual meeting of Coosa Valley Credit Union. We didn’t know those changes would stat the top. President and CEO Ron Tomlinson announced his plans to retire during the financial institution’s Annual Meeting at The Forum on Saturday night. Stepping up to replace him, effective today, is Andy Harris, former VP of Lending and Member Support Services. Tomlinson will remain with the credit union through his June 30 retirement date; Harris will join us at 7:10 a.m. Monday on Hometown Headlines Radio Edition on WRGA 98.7 FM. As for Tomlinson: He has left an indelible footprint in the financial community, especially with growing offices in Cartersville and Rockmart in recent years.
