Media release: Students from Georgia Northwestern Technical College’s Cosmetology program on the Floyd County Campus recently volunteered their time and talent to the William S. Davies Homeless Shelter in Rome.

The students provided free haircuts to people in need during Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday as part of an initiative developed by Southern Company to give back to the community.

“The students jumped at the opportunity to be a part of this once we heard about it,” said Susan Stephens, instructor of Cosmetology at GNTC. “It didn’t matter that it was during a holiday, every one of them showed up.”

In addition to the haircuts, clients also were provided with personal hygiene bags with supplies donated by Dr. John Beninato and his staff and Paris Beauty Supply.

“One of the best things about the field of Cosmetology is we acquire a talent so we can provide this sort of service to the community,” said Anna Williams, instructor of Cosmetology at GNTC.

Participating students included: Gabby Boyd, Doralee Burnes, Christine Daniels, Aubri Gazaway, Nakesha Hayes, Amelia Marks, Priscilla Martin, Allison Roebuck, and Marisa Sanchez.

Katie Bishop, instructor of Cosmetology at GNTC, also led the students alongside Williams and Stephens.

According to Stephens, Cosmetology students and instructors plan to make community service an ongoing part of the program.

“I think the students left the shelter with more than they came in with,” said Stephens. “It was just a great day all around.”
