Obituaries: Remembering Mrs. Catherine Jane Lowery, Mr. Joseph “Joe” Matushin Jr., Eugene Talmadge Selman
Mrs. Catherine Jane Lowery, 69, of Cave Spring, died Monday afternoon, January 11, 2016 in a Rome hospital following an extended illness. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by John House’s Cave Spring Chapel Funeral Home.
Eugene Talmadge Selman, 82, died Friday, Jan. 8, 2016. Visitation is from noon until 2 p.m. Tuesday at North Broad Baptist Church, 1309 N. Broad St. NE. Services are from 2 until 3 p.m .at the church. Daniel’s Funeral Home.
Mr. Joseph “Joe” Matushin Jr., age 86, of Rome, passed away on Monday, January 11, 2016, in a local hospital.
Mr. Matushin was born in Scranton, PA, on March 18, 1929, son of the late Joseph Matushin, Sr. and the late Mary Plauga Matushin. He was a veteran having served with both the United States Army and the United States Navy during WWII. He was employed as Engineer with Erie Lackawanna Railroad for 25 years, and prior to his retirement, he was employed by the Bekaert Corporation. He was a member of the Silver Creek United Methodist Church, a member of Gideon’s International, East Camp, a member of the American Legion Post # 5 and a life member of the VFW Post #3402, White Plains, NJ. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty Howard Matushin, and by a brother, Ed Matushin.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Mrs. Amy Scherf and her husband, Rick, Cartersville, and Mrs. Beth Evans and her husband, Gerald, Kingston; 4 grandchildren, Mrs. Michelle Smith and her husband, Ronald, Alpharetta, Mrs. Mindy Clegg and her husband, Jerome, Conyers, Donovan Cox, Emerson, and Collin Cox, Rome; 4 great grandchildren, Brandon Smith, Kelly Smith, and Jordan Smith, all of Alpharetta, and Fiona Clegg, Conyers; a sister Ann Harris, Tunkhannock, PA; a brother, Michael Matushin, West Palm Bay, FL; several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 13, 2016, at 2pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel with the Rev. Lee Smollar officiating. Interment will follow in the Wax Cemetery with full military honors presented by the American Legion Post # 5 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Tuesday from 4 until 6pm. At other hours, they may be contacted at their respective residences.
