Local churches are gearing up for a busy summer of Vacation Bible School events. Many have been preparing since the first of the year gathering materials, designing decorations and recruiting volunteers to help organize the events that will reach hundreds of children in the community.

Kristian Brown, Children’s Minister at Pleasant Valley South Baptist Church in Silver Creek, says she is daily working to gear up for their VBS on June 4-7 that will feature the “Shipwrecked: Rescued by Jesus” theme.

“I really started in January with ordering materials and then really geared up my planning for decorations in early April, right after Easter. We are planning for over 200 kids this year, so we’ve been working to recruit volunteers,” she says.

With this year’s theme, Brown is planning decorations with an island, jungle and underwater theme for the different areas of the church.

“I have spent lots of hours on Pinterest looking at ideas. I have had to narrow down what decorations we want in which areas and then started making it all come to life,” she says. “To help with decoration, I’ve made ‘take home’ packets of decorations to send home with volunteers so they can help do some things at home.

“And we’ve also started a prayer calendar this year for our senior adults to be involved in praying for our VBS. So many of them can’t physically be here to help, but want to be involved, so prayer is a great way they can help.”

Joan Brock, VBS Director at First Presbyterian Church in Rome, is also busy getting up for their program on June 25-29. They will also be using the “Shipwrecked: Rescued by Jesus” theme.

“We are expected some 180 children, so we have been busy getting ready since February. We have our volunteers assigned to different teams for decorations, music, theatre and more,” she says. “The great thing is that folks have just volunteered to help, we didn’t have to ask for volunteers, they are just coming and filling in the spots…we’ve really been overwhelmed with the response.”

Brock says she has well over 100 volunteers of all ages from 80 down to teenagers participating.

“We are a multi-generational church, so it is great to have all ages helping,” she says.
