The Darlington Community gathered in the Dodd Banquet Room on May 8 to celebrate three seniors as they committed to continue playing athletics in college. Lizzie LaVangie signed with Birmingham Southern in lacrosse; Samanda Cox signed with Oglethorpe in lacrosse; and Austin Cloud signed with Snead State to play baseball.


Josh Mitchell

Josh Mitchell has been named as the new head baseball coach at Model High School.  Mitchell is a 2009 graduate of Model High School, where he played four years of varsity baseball.  After Model, he continued his baseball career at Shorter University. After three years at Shorter, he transferred to Berry College to finish his Bachelors Degree in Middle Grade Education. Coach Mitchell has been with the Chattooga County School system for the past four years. While at Chattooga, he has been the Head Baseball Coach for three seasons, reaching the postseason two of those three years. He also spent one season as an assistant baseball coach at the high school and four seasons as the head middle school softball coach. He and his wife, who is also a Model graduate, currently reside in Adairsville.


Class 4A: Cartersville at home starting Tuesday in semifinals playing winner Heritage-Catoosa. Double-header begins at 4 p.m.; third game, if needed, is at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Rome Braves pounded by Augusta, 15-1. Media release: The Augusta GreenJackets won 15-1 against the Rome Braves on Thursday night. The GreenJackets were in control of the game with a 5-1 lead before the seventh inning. Jason Bahr dominated on the mound going six innings, only giving up six hits and striking out 11. At the plate, Manuel Gerlado tripled with the bases loaded and scored three runs to give the GreenJackets a commanding lead. Then in the seventh inning, the GreenJackets ended the Braves. With the bases loaded, Jacob Gonzalez hit a grand slam that extended the lead to nine runs. After two walks, Ryan Kirby hit a three-run home run to deep center field. Then to finish off the inning, Heliot Ramos hit a two-run home run that gave the GreenJackets a 15-1 lead. The 10-run seventh was the most runs scored in an inning by Augusta this season.  With the win, the GreenJackets take back solo first in the Southern Division of the South Atlantic League. They will be back in action tomorrow at 7:05 pm for the final game of the series with the Rome Braves.

Next: At  Augusta  tonight at 7:05 p.m.; at Hickory Saturday through Tuesday.

Class 3A: Calhoun will play Westminster Friday at 7:30 p.m. at McEachern for the state championship.


Friday: Coosa will be playing Jacksonville (Ala.) High and LaFayette in in a football scrimmage. “We will begin the fun at 5 p.m. There will be food trucks – BBQ, Mexican, Cagle’s Southern Eats, Spartan Smoothies, shaved ice and pies. Come eat, take pictures at the photo booth, enjoy music (5:30 p.m., the live music from Hunter & Chase will start) and watch some football.” Tailgating begins at 5 p.m.

Tuesday: Spring football for the Model Blue Devils, 6 p.m. Admission: Soap powder.

May 18: Rome vs. North (!) Paulding, Barron Stadium.


The Berry College softball team will face the Hornets of Lynchburg College at Emory University to open their fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Competition will begin at 2 p.m. on Friday in the double-elimination regional in Atlanta.

Berry Softball Trio Earns CoSIDA Academic All-DistrictBerry College’s Kylie Aiken, Kassie Howard and Brittany Tuttle have been selected to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District Softball Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The program recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.

First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot, with first- and second-team Academic All-America honorees to be announced in June.

  • Aiken, a senior infielder from Johns Creek, earns recognition for the first time in her career after posting a 3.70 career GPA. She was selected as the Southern Athletic Association Player of the Year at the conclusion of the regular season, leading the team with a .426 average.
  • Howard, a senior pitcher from Alpharetta, earns her third straight Academic All-District nod with a 3.81 GPA. She was named the SAA Pitcher of the Year after eclipsing 700 career strikeouts this season, posting a 22-1 record on the year.
  • Tuttle, a senior outfielder from Snellville, also earns her third straight Academic All-District honor posting a 3.93 GPA. Tuttle became the first Viking in program history so pass 100 career stolen bases this year, posting a .427 average..
