Unity Christian School Lady Lions won the GICAA Soccer State Championship at Moba Soccer Academy in Peachtree City on Saturday. The game was scoreless through regulation and two over time periods. The Lions prevailed over Peachtree Academy when the game went to penalty kicks. Freshman Maggie Eddins scored on the first attempt. Peachtree answered with two kicks of their own. Senior Chanceley Book tied the game. Then Junior Mary Nance kicked the game winner. This is Unity’s third Soccer Championship in a row. (Thanks to Jason Free for the update).

Rome Braves 12-hit attack sparks 6-3 victory over Asheville. Media release: The Rome Braves topped the Asheville Tourists Saturday night 6-3 at State Mutual Stadium before 3,542 fans. Brent Boswell’s RBI single in the first inning gave Asheville a 1-0 advantage and in the fourth Ryan Vilade singled home another run for the 2-0 score. Rome made it a 2-1 game in the bottom of the inning thanks to Jean Carlos Encarnacion’s run scoring base hit. The Braves took the lead in the fifth highlighted by Jefry Ramos’ double to plate Rome’s second run of the night and Drew Lugbauer’s RBI single for the 3-2 score. The lead didn’t hold long as Asheville tied the game 3-3 in the top of the sixth on Vilade’s second RBI single of the game. Derian Cruz tripled home the go ahead run in the bottom of the inning and Encarnacion’s two run single in the seventh gave Rome the 6-3 win. Encarnacion had three RBI in the game. Jake Belinda (2-0) earns the win in relief while Antonio Santos (0-4) is the loser. Hayden Deal mops up in the ninth to get his first save of the season.

Trion at Irwin County: Trion will travel to Irwin County as originally scheduled. From GHSA: “The Court Of Appeals for the State of Georgia on Friday suspended the Order entered on May 2, 2018, by the Superior Court of Charlton County. The effect of this ruling is to reinstate the Class A Public Baseball brackets as originally published by the GHSA.  Revised dates are as follows: the Class A-Public second-round series will be played on Monday-Tuesday, May 7 & 8, the quarterfinal round will be played on Friday-Saturday, May 11 & 12 and the semifinal round will be played on Wednesday-Thursday, May 16 & 17. The is for Class A Public ONLY. All other classification brackets will remain as scheduled.

Class 3A: Calhoun advances after beating Pike County, 2-1. They will play Windsor Forest in semifinals on Tuesday.

Class 2A

Model will play Putnam Co. in semifinals on Tuesday.
Pepperell lost to Thomasville, 2-1, on penalty kicks.
Armuchee falls to Benedictine, 4-0.

State tennis tournament comes to Rome Tennis Center at Berry College on May 12. Tickets are $5. Start times have been released by the Georgia High School Association. They are:

Softball: GHC LadyChargers defeat Georgia Military College 7-4 to advance to the GCAA championship game today at 1 p.m. at Stars Field in Cartersville.
