Updated: Rome man now faces murder charge following death of severely beaten 2-year-old child.

In a month designated to raise awareness to combat child abuse, another grim statistic has been recorded.

Hassan Shareef Rashad, 38. of a Dodd Boulevard address, is now charged with murder following his arrest Friday on multiple charges including two counts of cruelty to children,  aggravated battery, aggravated assault,  traffic offenses and a “hold” on other charges from Clayton County, according to Floyd County Jail reports.

This statement was issued just before 8 p.m. Sunday by Floyd County Police:

On Friday, April 13, 2018, Floyd County Police responded to a call regarding an unresponsive 2-year-old child.  During the investigation, it was discovered that the 2-year-old and a 5-year-old child were left in the care of Hassan Rashad, 38 year old, from a Dodd Blvd address.  The 2-year-old child had been severely injured and suffered multiple internal injuries; the child later died as a result of the injuries sustained.  The act was committed in the presence of the 5-year-old child.  As a result of the investigation, Rashad was charged with Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault, two counts of Cruelty to Children in the first degree degree and felony murder.

WRGA reported Friday that Rashad was arrested “after reportedly causing bodily harm to the victim.” The injuries were so substantial that he “caused enough harm to the victim‘s body to render them useless.”
Below is Rashad’s latest listing at the Floyd County Jail:
