Rome City Schools are preparing students for upcoming Georgia Milestone Assessments on April 16-24 for 3rd through 8th grades. Assistant Superintendent of RCS, Dr. Dawn Williams gives some helpful hints to help parents and students get prepared for for the tests.

  1. Explain the purpose of the tests. The assessments give students an opportunity to show what they have learned in school. They also give teachers information that helps them plan instruction.
  2. Encourage your student to employ good study and test-taking skills. These skills include following directions carefully, avoiding careless errors, and reviewing work.
  3. Be certain your student is at school on time. Rushing and worrying about being late could affect performance on the tests.
  4. Remember to ask your student about the testing at the end of each day.
  5. Make sure your student gets plenty of sleep and has a healthy breakfast. Taking tests is hard work for many students and can require a lot of energy.
  6. Point out that some items may be more difficult than others.
  7. Acknowledge test-taking anxiety as normal, but stay positive!
  8. Encourage your student to think positive thoughts such as, “I can do this!”.
  9. Remind your child to do their best, but that this is just one test.

  1. Read the whole question and all of the answers before marking your answer.
  2. Answer every question! Make an educated guess if necessary.
  3. Pace yourself and watch your time so that you can complete all questions. Use all of the time to double check answers if you finish early.
