A Rome man is in custody Tuesday evening following an investigation into a shots fired complaint that led to the mobilization of the SWAT Team.
Jemael Rashaud Stewart, 21, of the Greenleaf Apartments was charged with aggravated assault with a firearm after surrendering to authorities without incident, says Rome Police Detective Aaron Thacker.
According to Thacker:
Around 5:19 p.m. Tuesday, police received two calls about shots fired in Avenue B.
One call came from a woman who was driving away from the scene who said she’d been fired at by the suspect.
Two witnesses saw Stewart return to an apartment at 1208 Avenue B and authorities went there attempting to investigate the complaint.
Stewart did not come out at first and the SWAT team was dispatched to the scene. Later, three others exited the building including the tenant and another man.
Stewart eventually surrendered, was charged and has been taken to the police department for additional questioning.
Thacker says the situation apparently stemmed for an incident that occurred on Monday.
We’ll have additional updates as needed.
