While we await signs of redevelopment for Rome’s shuttered Kmart property, it appears there is movement at the former Kmart store in Calhoun that closed last fall. Property owners M&P Calhoun, LLC (d/b/a M&P Shopping Centers) is seeking bids for interior demolition of the store and reconfiguration of the interior and facade to the Calhoun Crossing shopping center at 122 WC Bryant Parkway, according to the construction website LDI Line.
According to the plans, a new Bargain Hunt store and Planet Fitness are on the way, as well as “raw space for two additional retail suites”. The required work includes that identified as “Landlord’s Work” in the bid documents and includes, but is not limited to, new mechanical systems, painting, new façade, and the build-out of the Bargain Hunt space. Representatives with M&P Shopping Centers did not return our calls for additional information.
Meanwhile, Romans will have to continue to wait and see what develops for the 15-plus acres of the Rome Kmart property along Turner McCall Blvd. Kmart’s lease with property owners RomeKim expired last fall, and while there’s been a whole slew of rumors out there, there has been nary a paper trail or definitive conversation to pursue.
The Cartersville Kmart store closed in January 2013. That building at the Cartersville Crossing shopping center has since been demolished with an Academy Sports & Outdoor and Party City rebuilt in its place.
