Store closing signs went up Friday at Rome’s Toys R Us off Martha Berry Highway with a liquidation sale now underway. Since the company announced plans last week to close some 735 stores across the country, we knew it was just a matter of time before it would happen.
The store parking lot was nearly full late Friday with shoppers hoping to snag a deal. As for the liquidation, most toys and games now 10% off, LEGO is 5% off, most baby items are 10% off and Easter items are 20% off. Items currently excluded from the markdown include diapers, baby formula and DVDs.
A store employee says the official closing date is expected sometime in May, but it will stay open until all merchandise is sold. Signs are up throughout the store that “all sales are final” and all Toys R Us gift cards must be redeemed for merchandise by April 21, 2018.
The store is open regular hours from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday-Friday; 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.
The closing comes amid some other retail shutdowns so far this year, from the IGA on Shorter to small shops including several downtown.
