HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

The 7-AA regional boys and girls basketball tournaments conclude today at Model High School. Admission is $7 per person. Concession: Hot dogs, popcorn and pizza.

Friday:

Model advances to 7-AA finals with 50-17 victory over Pepperell.

Rome wins 62-29 over Kell.

Rockmart wins 64-51 over Gordon Central.

Saturday: 

2 p.m. Consolation game: Pepperell vs. Gordon Central

7 p.m. Championship game: Model vs. Rockmart (Side note: No. 2 Putnam County was upset in the semifinals and finals of region tournaments and, if Model wins tonight, those teams will play at Model in the first round)

For first round of state playoffs, Rome Lady Wolves will play loser of today’s Buford/Flowery Branch game.

COLLEGE

  • The Southern Athletic Association (SAA) has announced the league’s fall Academic Honor Roll with the Berry College Vikings placing 98 student-athletes on the list. To qualify, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.25 for the term and be a regular member of a varsity athletic team in a sport sponsored by the conference. COMMUNITY

Arsenal spring recreational soccer league returns: For ages 4 to 15 for boys and girls, early registration runs through Feb. 17. The focus is participation and fun. Fundamental skills are developed and refined through games and activities.  Sportsmanship, respect and responsibility are all key components. All our recreational coaches are licensed through Georgia Soccer. Every game starts with a prayer and ends with a handshake. Practices are held once a week for one hour. Practices begin March 6th. Games are played on Fridays or Saturdays. Games begin March 16th and end May 12th (nine week, eight game season). Every child receives an award at the end of the season and there is a season-ending pizza party for players and their teams. Age groups are U6, U8, U10, U12 and U15 with separate boys and girls divisions in each age group.      Cost: YMCA members  $69; non members $109. A $10  regular registration increase applies after Feb. 17.   Cost includes jersey, end of season award and Cow Patty Bingo party as well as Georgia Soccer Association registration.  
Lil’ Gunners preschool soccer: Classes focus on introducing soccer through outrageously fun games and activities. We help develop social, emotional, and cognitive skills while providing physical exercise and developing players who are good teammates – on and off the soccer field. Classes meet at Grizzard Park on Thursday afternoons from 5-5:35 p.m. and there are a maximum of 15 participants per class. Y members $ 25; non members, $40. Session 1 – March/April – 3/153/22, 4/5 & 4/12. Session 2 – April/May – 4/194/26, 5/3 & 5/10.  Cost includes team shirt and medal.
