We’re watching the Oostanaula River this afternoon and into the weekend because of heavy rains in recent days as well as what’s due between Friday and Sunday. We’ve seen nearly three inches of rain in Rome since Sunday, including a very soggy Wednesday, and the current forecast is tracking the threat of even more rain. We’re looking at 2.4 inches of additional rain between 4 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. The runoff from that new round of rain will collect in the Oostanaula.
Hazardous weather outlook:
Several upper level systems will move through the area through the extended period, especially the weekend resulting in a very wet period. Total rainfall could reach 3 to 5 inches over portions of north Georgia this week with some minor flooding likely. Thunderstorms are also possible on Sunday afternoon although severe storms are not anticipated at this time.
What to watch:
19 feet: That’s action stage, which means flood gates usually are closed.
25 feet: That’s flood stage, which usually includes spillover into some of the surrounding paths along the river.
