Buzz: Free throw competition for kids up to 14 returns Saturday. Iwo Jima hero to speak to the Puryear Detachment, Marine Corps League on Saturday.

Free throw competition is Saturday, Feb. 10. The Knights of Columbus of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church hosts the annual Free Throw Competition this Saturday at Saint Mary’s School on Seventh Street (behind Bojangles off Turner McCall). Competition starts at 9 a.m. for kids ages 9 through 11 and others will follow up to age 14. The competition is free for all. Parents need to complete an application sheet which are available at the YMCA on Second Avenue, East Central Elementary and Saint Mary’s Catholic School. Registration forms also will be available Saturday at the event. Parents must accompany their children. Competition will be by age group with trophies for the winners.

T. Fred Harvey, a member of the World War II Marine Parachute Battalion and a Silver Star recipient for heroism on Iwo Jima, will address the Puryear Detachment, Marine Corps League,  Saturday at the Rome-Floyd County Library, 205 Riverside Parkway.  Coffee and doughnuts will be available at 9 a.m. and the meeting will convene at 9:30 a.m.  Harvey, a resident of Kerrville, Texas,  is author of the book, “Hell Yes, I’d Do It All Again.”  Commandant Tom Beavers invites all area Marines to attend.
