Nan Selman has had a “knack for making goodies” for years. Each Christmas, for example, she’s made batches of sweet stuff for family and friends who, while appreciative, repeatedly urged her to do it for a living.
So she launched a home-based operation and now has decided to go traditional brick-and-mortar –a storefront at 4512 Martha Berry HIghway in Armuchee, most recently the home of Fat Bottom’s barbecue.
Selman’s Country Store is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from noon until 7 p.m. with chocolates, a dessert bar with coffee and a growing gift shop. “It’s a little country store . . . I add things as I see them,” she says.
The main offerings are homemade chocolates (including strawberries), homemade pies, cookies, French press coffee, chocolate and caramel fondue and other treats. Her motto: “Taste some good treats and fill that sweet tooth.”
Selman is receiving exceptional praise for one of those pies — chocolate chess pie. “I don’t know if I’ll be able to make enough,” she adds.
The store has been open for more than a week and she’s taking orders for Valentine’s Day as well. Because of the holiday, Selman’s expanding her hours to briefly on Feb. 12 and 13, from noon until 7 p.m., and from noon until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14.
One point she made in our conversation: She’s not raising prices because of the expected Valentine’s rush. The amount you pay today will be what you pay on Feb. 14.
