Trion man injured in Armuchee collision Tuesday night dies from injuries. Also: Alabama driver indicted on charges from a nearby accident that killed a Cedartown man.

A Trion man injured in a serious collision at Ga. 140 and U.S. 27 on Tuesday night has died.

Charles E. “Buddy” Hammonds, age 83, “passed away peacefully Friday January 12, 2018, in Floyd Medical Center after injuries sustained in an automobile (accident),” according to his obituary noticed posted by Mason Funeral Home of Summerville. “The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the Georgia State Patrol and the trauma/ICU team of Floyd Medical Center for their compassion and care during this time.”

Earlier reports from WRGA 98.7 FM said the Georgia State Patrol had charged a Shannon man in connection with the wreck.

According to the GSP, a 2004 Chevrolet Colorado driven by 62-year old Earnest Irvin Greenleaf of Shannon was traveling south, turning left onto Ga. 140. A 1992 Buick LeSabre driven by 77-year old Jean Deloris Hammonds of Summerville was traveling north on U.S. 27 in the outside lane. The Colorado turned in front of the Buick, striking the LeSabre in the front with its front. Both vehicles came to an uncontrolled final rest facing north in the northbound lanes. Hammonds and her husband were both transported to Floyd Medical Center.

Greenleaf was jailed Thursday on charges of two counts of serious injury by vehicle, DUI, open container and failure to yield while turning left, according to the state patrol.

We have a note into the state patrol for any updates on the case.

Mr. Hammonds’ arrangements:

Mr. Hammonds was born Sept. 15, 1934, in Trion, the son of the late Edward Dawson Hammonds and Lucille Sosebee Hammonds.  Mr. Hammonds was a self-employed electrician and was preceded in death by a son, James Hammonds, and a sister, Nina Whitaker. Survivors include his wife; Jean Hammonds, daughter; Debbie Baird Williams, and grandson; Thomas Nicholas Boyd.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kevin J. Norton officiating. Burial will follow at Old Trion Cemetery.
