The celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. continues today with the annual prayer breakfast will be held at The Forum beginning at 9 a.m. Tickets were presold for the event. Dr. Eric Holland, the principal at Rome High School, is guest speaker.

On Sunday, an ecumenical service is set for 5 p.m.  at the Thankful Baptist Church, 935 Spider Webb Drive. The guest speaker is the Rev. Dr. Darrell D. Elligan, Pastor of the True Light Baptist Church in Atlanta.

On Monday, the annual Freedom March on Broad Street is at 11:30 a.m. and will begin at First Avenue. It will be followed by a program at Rome City Auditorium. Cassandra Wheeler, the new regional director at Georgia Power, is the guest speaker. The celebration concludes with a luncheon at the Rome Civic Center.


Floyd County Board of Education meetings set. The board will have a called board meeting on Friday, Feb. 2, at 4 p.m. Members will go into a closed meeting to personnel and property (as permitted by state law).  Also, the February board meeting is Tuesday, Feb. 6. The caucus at 5 p.m. in Dr. John Jackson’s office with the board meeting at 6 p.m. in the board room.

 The 78th annual meeting of the Cartersville-Bartow County Chamber of Commerce was held Thursday night. Honored as the manufacturer of the year was Shaw Industries. Earning small business of the year honors was Pendley Heating and Air Conditioning.

From the YMCA of Rome and Floyd County: Free coats are available at the YMCA this weekend. With the help of our members, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Trinity United Methodist Church and many people around our community, we have collected wonderful, warm, clean coats to give to anyone in need. The coats are free; no paperwork to complete. Just come to the Y at 810 E. Second Ave. and select a coat as follows:

  • Today, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sunday, 1 until 4 p.m.

Jason Lee, a survivor of child sexual abuse, will be the guest speaker at Advocates for Children’s upcoming Annual Meeting on Jan. 23.  The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Clarence Brown Conference Center, also will include recognition of outstanding volunteers and a buffet dinner catered by Harvest Moon.
