First elected in 2004 and re-elected in 2008, 2012 and 2016, Sheriff Tim Burkhalter confirmed Wednesday he will retire at the end of his current term in 2020. In a video briefing, Burkhalter announced his career plans as he starts his 14th year in office. By 2020, he’ll have been with the agency for 35 years, almost half of which as sheriff.

In the video, Burkhalter told of the highlights of his terms, including earning accreditation for the agency and national recognition for some of the programs launched by the agency following the motto “A positive in our community.”

Most recently, Burkhalter and staff spearheaded hurricane relief efforts under the Rome Cares banner, which included joining caravans with relief supplies to hurricane-ravaged parts of Texas and Florida.
