Obituaries: Ms. Betty Lois Gilmore, Mrs. Annie D. Pledger and Mrs. Anne Arleita Abel Shannon

Ms. Betty Lois Gilmore, age 78, of Rome, passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2018, at her residence.

Ms. Gilmore was born in Rome, Georgia on July 3, 1939, daughter of the late Romie J. Cook and the late Tessie M. Brown Cook. She was also preceded in death by five sisters, Dorothy Adams, Sara Carver, Mildred Cook, Mary Beck and Jeanette Collins, and by three brothers, Jim Cook, Irvin Cook and Bobby Cook. Prior to retirement, Ms. Gilmore worked for 18 years for Bekaert Corporation. She was a member of the Faith Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Tammy Hawkins and her husband, William, Rome; a son, John Kendrick and his wife, Kimsey, Rome; a sister, Ruby J. Cox, Newland, NC; two brothers, Ricky Cook, Cedartown, and Romie Franklin Cook, Cedartown; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at 3pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Rev. Reginald Campbell officiating. Private interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Tuesday from 1pm until 2:45pm.

Mrs. Annie D. Pledger, age 90, of Lindale, passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2018, at her residence.

Mrs. Pledger was born in Centre, Alabama on April 25, 1927, daughter of the late Robert Wilkes and the late Rebecca Surrett Wilkes. She was also preceded by her adoptive parents who raised her, Hugh & Edith Richardson, by her husband, Grover Pledger, on June 17, 1999, by a grandson, Marcus Pledger, and by five siblings, Harold Wilkes, Roy Wilkes, Howard Williams, John Richardson and Charlene Webb. Mrs. Pledger was a homemaker and was a member of the Desoto Park Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Evans and her husband, David, Lindale; a son, Terry W. Pledger and his wife, Kathy, Silver Creek; four grandchildren, Michael Pledger, Stacey Henderson and her husband, Shawn, Jamie Hembree and her husband, Jared, and Joshua Evans and his wife, Kayla; four great grandchildren, Landon & Lawson Henderson and Cooper & Hudson Hembree; three brothers, Harry, Larry & Jerry Richardson; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 8, 2018, at 3pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Rev. Scott Lambert officiating. Interment will follow in Floyd Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Monday from 1:30pm until 2:45pm.

Pallbearers are asked to assemble at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel on Monday at 2:30pm and include: Joshua Evans, Jared Hembree, Shawn Henderson, Andy Thomason, Nicholas Thomason and Will Gordon.

Anne SHANNON Obituary

Mrs. Anne Arleita Abel Shannon, age 98, of Rome, passed away at a local healthcare facility Friday, January 5, 2018.

Mrs. Shannon was born in Macon, GA. November 19, 1919. She was the daughter of the late Sydney Wiley Abel and Ethel Mae Little Abel. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Virgil M. Shannon, three brothers, Pat Abel, James Abel, and Johnny Abel; one sister, Bessie Mae Dykes, and her granddaughter’s husband, Shane Richardson.

She graduated from Miller High School in Macon, GA. She enjoyed sewing, baking, she was an avid golfer, and was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. Also she was the Grand Matron and long-time member of the Constellation Chapter of the Eastern Star. She was an Elder at First Christian Church as well as a member of Christian Women’s Fellowship, Rome, and was a member of the Home Makers Club and the Antique Car Club of Rome. One of her favorite Bible verses was: Mark 9:23, “Jesus said unto them, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.”

Mrs. Shannon is survived by one son, Virgil “Rodney” Shannon (Linda) of Rome, one daughter, Debbye Shannon Akins of Rome; three granddaughters, Robin Warden of Springhill, TN, Tracey Murphy (Terry) of Rome, and DeAnn Richardson of Rome; seven great grandchildren, Shannon and Asher Warden, Tyler and Talyn Murphy, Jake, Sam and Molly Richardson. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends Sunday, January 7, 2018 at Daniel’s Funeral Home from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. A service will follow at 3:00 PM in the Thomas B. Griffin Chapel of Daniel’s Funeral Home with Rev. Horace Stewart officiating. Mrs. Shannon’s entombment will be Monday, January 8, 2018, at 2:00 PM, at Oaknoll Cemetery in the St. Luke Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests memorial contributions be made to First Christian Church, 209 East 2nd Avenue, Rome, GA 30161.
