What we hear: High school coach to take over Shorter’s football program? Lots of interest in Cartersville’s Mellow Mushroom. New officers joining Rome Police. Tickets to National Championship? $2,000 to start.

High school football coach joining Shorter? We’ve been given a head’s up to look for a new head football coach to be named, perhaps as early as this week. We do know talks have taken place with a couple of Northwest Georgia coaches but we don’t expect any “big” names to surprise us with a move. The new coach replaces Aaron Kelton, who was winless in two years with the Hawks. Kelton also was serving as interim athletics director. Phil Jones was Shorter’s coach for 11 seasons, including the start-up years.

Cartersville fans, stay Mellow as resolution pending in pizza restaurant closing. That would be the downtown Mellow Mushroom. We’re hearing a lot of the same reports you are and we know negotiations are under way but not yet finalized. If it goes the way the rumors are tracking, it will be a win-win scenario for Cartersville.  As Mellow corporate has said, it is a great market and they’re anxious to get the doors open. So are some surprise franchise bidders.

New officers joining Rome Police Department: Six recruits and a new sergeant will be sworn in today at 9 a.m. in the Municipal Courtroom.

Speaking of criminal: The above graphic is a frame grab from a Ticketmaster check Tuesday evening of tickets to Monday’s UGA-Alabama football national championship game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Minimum ticket and parking: $2,000 with a max approaching $8,000. That’s a lot of trips to Pasadena.
