This update from Capt. Jason Smith of The Salvation Army on what’s available for those seeking shelter from the cold:
  • Our shelter serves as a warming station when temperatures drop below 32 degrees throughout the year.
  • Our dining room facility is open throughout the day, offering refuge for homeless individuals as well as those with inadequate heat in their homes.
  • Our shelter capacity is 20 beds for men and four beds for women. We have additional cots available for overflow if needed.
  • Donations of coats, gloves, hand warmers, scarves and other winter gear is always appreciated. These items are distributed regularly to those who participate in our shelter and community feeding programs. Items may be dropped off at 317 E. First Ave.

No additional shelters planned for Rome/Floyd County as of this morning: Emergency Management Director Tim Herrington says his office spent part of Tuesday taking steps in case shelters were needed. As of Tuesday night, the agency had received one call about no heat and EMA was able to given the caller an older heat that had been at the office. For now, no shelter openings are planned, Herrington says.
