Old and young celebrate Marine Corps’ birthday: The 242nd birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps was celebrated at the Palladium Friday evening by the Puryear Detachment, Marine Corps League. By tradition, the oldest and youngest Marines present share the first slices of the birthday cake. Lt. Gen. Willie Williams, of Huntsville, Ala., from left, was guest speaker. He is shown with Robert Rakestraw, 93, and Pfc Jonathan Ledbetter, 18, son of Steve and Mandy Ledbetter, Rome, who graduated recruit training at Parris Island, S.C., on Thursday.

Veterans honored at Myrtle Hill ceremony: WRGA captured the tribute, including the above photo, and the speech by District Attorney Leigh Patterson. She said 7,236 veterans in Floyd County and that two work in her office — with a third to be added. She urged the crowd to help veterans in plenty of ways: support their charitable causes,  help at the homeless shelters in town and recognize them in church. Read the expanded story here.
