Pending a final inspection from the fire marshal, Julie Robinson hopes to open her transplanted The Southern Shoppe this Friday at 204 Broad St., next to Frios Gourmet Pops and Whistle Britches.
Robinson opened Southern Shoppe in Hiawassee in Northeast Georgia in January but says she wanted a location in a “busier market.” So she’s relocating with her family, including one of her twin sons who will work with her in the shop while earning his degree in emergency medical treatment from Georgia Northwestern Technical College (he had been attending North Georgia College in Dahlonega).
Her concept is an interesting one that blends some of the more popular concepts arriving in the downtown community. First, the retail side: Southern Shoppe offers a big selection of home decor products but also some clothing (including specially decision T-shirts) and jewelry. Most if not all come from southern vendors, she adds, and the shop will have some items that are exclusive to Northwest Georgia.
Next comes classes, including furniture painting tips. Southern Shoppe will be closed Sundays and Mondays, and then open Tuesdays for classes only, day and night. Individuals, groups, mother-and-daughter events and parties will be the focus of the classes-only day.
From Wednesday through Saturday, look for the focus to be on the retail and design end, with hours of 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. For now, Robinson and her son will staff the store with more employees to be added as business grows, she says.
Most of next week will serve as a soft opening for Southern Shoppe with a holiday open house set for Saturday, Nov. 18, in conjunction with downtown Rome’s Christmas shopping kickoff.
