Sweet Pickles, one of downtown Rome’s quiet successes, has new owners.

For nearly 10 years, Penny Haack nurtured Sweet Pickles into one of downtown Rome’s success stories — but did so without a lot of the usual trappings. Sandwich by sandwich, ladle by ladle, slice by slice, Haack grew Sweet Pickles beyond its tasty namesake. Sandwiches, soups, cakes — all favorites with an eclectic group of regulars.

For much of the last three years, Megan Carter joined her at 434 Broad St. But some of that has changed now as Megan and her husband,  Rome native Jason Carter, has purchased the business and are wrapping up one month of ownership.

Jason’s name is a familiar one: His mother, Barbara, was the county extension director for years. He’s also a Rome High graduate. After college, Jason moved to Oklahoma where he met Megan and now they’re trying something new together.

“We’re not trying to change a lot of things… we’re just getting adjusted,” Jason said Friday. “The menu will feature a lot of the same things… some of those recipes have been around for 10 years now.”

The hours will be changing a bit but that will wait. Currently open weekdays from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., Jason says a similar Saturday schedule is pending and maybe Sunday hours as well. No dates have been set as yet.

One change is under way — a weekly special has been added as you can see in the example to the right.
