A week ago, Polk County Police Chief Kenny Dodd was numbed by the ambush murder of one of his detectives, Kristen Hearne. At her funeral Tuesday, while paying tribute to Hearne and her family, he reminded the massive turnout of law officers to be careful, to remain vigilant.  “May God bless each and every law enforcement agency here … and may god bless the United States of America,” Dodd said as he concludes his emotional eulogy.

Friday morning, Dodd was seriously injured Friday morning after he stopped to assist two pedestrians on the side of the road, according to reports from WGAA 1340 AM. Polk County Fire Chief Randy Lacey told the station Dodd was driving to work in his police vehicle when he saw a mother and child walking along the roadway on U.S. 278 near Polk Medical Center. Dodd stopped to render assistance. As he was getting back into his police vehicle, a truck struck his car from behind, pushing it off the road. Dodd was awake and responsive while being transported to a Rome area hospital for treatment of his injuries. His vehicle was destroyed. The mother and child were unhurt, according to WGAA. Please see the station’s expanded story here.

Update: Dodd has been discharged from Redmond Regional Medical Center.
