For months, the rumors have crossed Rome about improvements coming to the 24-year-old Chick-fil-A Dwarf House on Shorter Avenue. Will they tear the current building down? Will they import a temporary building during the rebuild? Where will the temp restaurant go?
The answers are here — and the site is probably the one best suited for such a mission and yet the least mentioned among the sidewalk superintendents in the community. Several locations were studied but this one will be the right choice.
The quarter-acre Riverside Parkway site was to be home to Steak ‘n Shake. Background: Steak n’ Shake corporate took out a 20-year lease there before the high-traffic Turner McCall store was selected instead. The footprint and even the drive-through were cut — and curbed — but most of it remained covered only in dirt. Seven years later, it’s about to get new life.
So what’s the plan? We talked with Greg Major on Tuesday. What is known:
“We started digging the pillars (Tuesday) and expect to finish construction/renovation of the site throughout the month with the container being set early October. No opening date has been set but we hope to have it ready to serve by mid to late October if all goes well with permitting and construction.”
There will be a few temporary changes as well: For one, sales will be drive-through only; there will not be a restaurant inside or a walk-up window. Also, look for a somewhat trimmed breakfast, lunch and dinner menu.
There’s a bonus with the temp location as well: “We will be needing to employ about 30 or so more team members when we open up. To apply, please visit dwarfhouse.wyckwyre.com or in person at 264 Shorter Ave.”
Once open, look for work to begin at the Shorter Avenue location with a new Chick-fil-A expected to debut in early 2018.
Also, it looks like the original restaurant on Shorter Avenue will go out with a party. Dwarf House is hosting Guest Appreciation Week next Monday through Friday, Sept. 11-15. In addition to freebies and deals, the 24th edition comes with an incentive to order via the Chick-fil-A One app — a free chicken sandwich.
