Dr. Afu Abdul joins Harbin Clinic Nephrology Calhoun and Cartersville: Whether or not he wears his white coat, Dr. Afu Abdul wants to positively impact the world. That could mean helping one of his patients manage the stages of kidney failure, or that could mean serving a hungry family at the local soup kitchen. Whatever the method, his philosophy is the same. “I just want to do good,” says Dr. Abdul. “That’s a huge reason why I’m a doctor. Medicine is one of those professions that explicitly allows you to make a positive impact on people’s lives. I want to help others take control of their health.” Joining Harbin Clinic Nephrology Calhoun and Cartersville, Dr. Abdul adds his expertise to the practice of Dr. M. Rashid Ishaque. Dr. Abdul isn’t shy about the bonds he feels toward his patients who, he says, are more like family to him. He says he began to truly realize the importance of building good relationships with patients and their families early on in his medical career. “Once, during my Internal Medicine Residency at Atlanta Medical Center, there was a man who was dying from lung disease,” Dr. Abdul recalls. “I didn’t just develop a relationship with the gentleman, but with his family, also. Even though he passed, his family was very appreciative of the care he was given. It taught me a lot about patient relationships. It was very humbling. That’s left a lasting impression on me.” For more on Dr. Abdul
