Obituaries: James Daniel, Mrs. Mary Edna Hammond, Eugene Franklin “Buddy” Matthews and James David Phillips

Mrs. Mary Edna Hammond, age 85, of Rome, passed away on Friday, August 4th, 2017, at a local hospital.

Mrs. Hammond was born in Cherokee County, AL on March 23, 1932, daughter of the late James Aubrey Bishop and the late Lois Ophelia Hinton Bishop. She was also preceded in death by 3 brothers, James Wallace Bishop, Tommy Aiken Bishop, and Jerry Wayne Bishop, and by a sister, Martha Eileen “Pat” Bishop. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Hammond was in the retail industry working at Belk in the River Bend Mall and for a stint at Mount Berry Square. She was a member of New Armuchee Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Perry Ray “P.R.” Hammond, to whom she was married on October 27, 1957; 2 daughters, Joni Hammond, Rome, GA, and Treva Bennett and her husband Trevor, Clarkesville GA; a grandson, Elijah Bennett, Clarkesville, GA; several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service for Mrs. Hammond will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2017, at 2:00 PM Georgia time at Providence Baptist Church Cemetery in Forney, AL with Barry Henderson officiating. At the other times, the family may be contacted at the respective residences.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Rome-Floyd Humane Society, 518 Broad Street Rome, GA 30161.

Mr. James Daniel, age 62, of 220 Jones Ave., Rockmart, GA passed on Friday, August 4, 2017.  The family will also receive friends at Larry’s (brother) residence, 909 Walnut St., Rome, GA.  F. K. Jones Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Eugene Franklin "Buddy" Matthews

Eugene Franklin “Buddy” Matthews, age 72, of Cave Spring, passed away Thursday August 3, 2017 in a local hospital.

Buddy was born November 15, 1944, in Floyd County, a son of the late Joe Thomas Matthews, and Ida Mae Matthews. He was a member of the Church of the Living Go. He was preceded in death a brother, Jimmy Matthews, and sister, Sarah Jo Brown.

Survivors include, God Parents, Gail and Ronny Westbrook, special nieces, Angel Bolmon, special nephew, Tim Johnson, brother J.T. Matthews, several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday August 6, 2017 at Good Shepherd Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Thomas Matthews, officiaitng. The family will receive friends from 2:00 P.M. until the service hour on Sunday, at Good Shepherd Funeral Home, 2750 Shorter Ave. Rome, Ga. 30165.

James David Phillips

James David Phillips, age 80, of Rome passed away Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at his residence.

Mr. Phillips was born May 8, 1937 in Floyd County, son of the late General Lee Phillips, and Alice Huff Phillips. He was retired from General Electric, and a veteran of the United States Army where he was an MP, loved his nieces and nephews. Mr. Phillips was a member of NRA, Woodman of World, Floyd County Wildlife Association, American Legion, and love guns. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Geneva Smith Phillips, and several brothers, and sisters.

Survivors include, sister in law, Jimmie Roberts, nieces, Ashlea Sprayberry, Kelley Rogers, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday August 7, 2017 at Good Shepherd Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Scott Lambert, officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens, with Shanklin-Attaway Post Honor Guard conducting full military Graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until the hour of the service on Monday, at Good Shepherd Funeral Home, 2750 Shorter Ave. Rome, Ga. 30165.
