Mr. William Hugh Austin Jr., 80, of 1 Shorter Circle. a devoted husband, loving father, beloved grandfather, Air Force veteran, and retired civil servant died Friday Night, July 28, 2017 at his home in Rome, GA.
A native of Rome, Mr. Austin was born on November 1, 1936, the son of William Hugh Austin Sr. and Katherine Logan Austin. He graduated from Darlington School in 1954 as valedictorian. He studied Aeronautical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) graduating in 1958. He was married to Barbara Eleanor Welsh on June 27, 1959.
The Austins were active members of the Allatoona Yacht Club (AYC) and Mr. Austin served as an officer of the Board for many years. He was also a member of the Friends of Theatre Board at Shorter College. Mr. Austin went by Jim Austin and loved poetry–especially by Edgar Allen Poe, Ogden Nash, and Sidney Lanier.
Before moving back home to Rome in 1995, Mr. Austin lived with his wife and five children in Dayton, Ohio. He was an engineer at Wright Patterson Air Force Base for 37 years. Among other professional accomplishments, he was a chief designer of the F15 fighter jet. He was instrumental in a commercial-government partnership between Boeing Corporation in Seattle, Washington, and the U.S. Air Force in the mid-1970s. In addition to his career, Mr. Austin served as an associate board member of the Dayton Art Institute.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Eleanor Welsh Austin, Rome; his five children: Mary Katherine Austin, San Francisco, CA; William David Austin, Rome, GA; Ann Margaret Austin, Sebastopol, CA; Jane Elizabeth Austin, San Francisco, CA; and Susan Rebecca Austin, Eugene, OR; and 10 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Daniel’s Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 1, 2017. Visitation is at 10:00 a.m. and the service starts at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment will be at Myrtle Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions to be made to the scholarship fund at Darlington School, 1014 Cave Spring Rd. SW, Rome, GA. 30161.
Mrs. Barbara Faye Worley Gray, age 80, of Rome, passed away on Monday, July 31, 2017, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 2, 2017, at 3 p.m. in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, with Minister Steve Rogers officiating. Interment will follow in Floyd Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Wednesday from 2pm until the service time. At other hours, they will be at their respective residences.
William Lee Terry, age 79, of Rome passed away Friday July 28, 2017 in local hospital.
Mr. Terry was born December 19, 1937, in Floyd County a son of the late Adolphus Terry and Annie Mae Devere Terry. He was retired from Streeman Variety Store, was of the Baptist Faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sharah Pruitt Terry, in 2015 and by a brother, Charles Terry.
Survivors include his daughters, Karen (Mitchell) Gregory, Rome; Tammie (Johnnie) McGinnis, Rome; brother, Hoyt (Wanda) Terry, Lindale; grandchildren, Kristie Godfrey, Heather Hindmon, and Derric Buck, 10 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday August 1, 2017 at Good Shepherd Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Shane Stephenson, officiating. Interment will follow in Rome Memorial Park. The family will receive friend’s from12:00 P.M. until the funeral hour on Tuesday, at Good Shepherd Funeral Home, 2750 Shorter Ave. Rome, Ga. 30165.
Pallbearers include the following gentlemen and are asked to meet at the funeral home Tuesday by 1:30 P.M. Chris Godfrey, Phillip Hindmon, Kaleb Buck, Derric Buck, Scott Gregory and Derick Pruitt.
