Georgia Power officials believe “equipment failure related to a transformer” caused a large fire Thursday afternoon at Plant Bowen in Euharlee. The transformer fire broke out around 3 p.m. and was contained to the switchyard, there was no fire inside the plant structure itself. There were no injuries as a result of the fire, however two Bartow County firefighters were taken to Cartersville Medical Center with minor injuries according to WSB-TV.

It took fire crews from Bartow County and surrounding areas over two hours to extinguish the blaze. Multiple agencies reported to the scene and Floyd E-911 reported assistance was requested from Rome-Floyd Fire Department.

Georgia Power issued this statement at 5 p.m. Thursday: “The transformer fire which started and was contained within the Plant Bowen switchyard earlier today is nearly completely extinguished. We have confirmed that there were no injuries as a result of the fire. Additionally, our power delivery system functioned as designed and there were no customer power outages as a result of this incident. The safety of our facilities and employees is our top priority every day. We are working to determine the exact cause of the fire, but we believe it was the result of an equipment failure related to a transformer.”

The Bartow County fire department said the fire extended to the roof of the building, causing moderate damage to the building and extensive damage to the transformer yard.
