Mr. Robert Lewis “Bud” Duke, Jr., age 88, affectionately known as “Mayor of Dukeville”, passed away Monday evening, July 10, 2017, in a local hospital.

Mr. Duke was born at the family residence in Rome, Ga., on September 10, 1928, son of the late Robert Lewis Duke Sr. and the late Katherine Ruth “Kitty” Daniel Duke. He was also preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Annie Ruth and Richard Prater, by a brother, Alan Duke, by a special niece, Valerie Prater Benson, and by a brother-in-law, Al Everett. Mr. Duke owned and operated Duke Grocery in Rome for many years, continuing the family operation of the store. His lifelong passion was his love for horses, of which he continued to ride frequently. He was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church and was a member of Armuchee Saddle Club.

Survivors include his sister, Juanita Duke Everett, Everett Springs; a brother, Charles Duke, and his wife, Judy, Rome; many nieces and nephews as well as cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2017, at 1 pm at Calvary Baptist Church with his nephews, the Rev. Brad Prater and Kevin Robert Duke officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, North Chapel, on Wednesday from 5 until 8 pm. At other hours, they may be contacted at the residence.

Mr. Duke will lie in state at Calvary Baptist Church on Thursday from noon until the funeral hour. Mr. Duke’s nephews will serve as pallbearers. His nieces, first cousins and his Sunday School Class at Calvary Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Mr. Roger Dale Edwards, age 65, of Cave Spring, passed away Sunday morning, July 9, 2017, at his residence.

Mr. Edwards was born in Rome, GA on June 18, 1952, son of the former Louise Tucker and the late Floyd Edwards.  He was also preceded in death by a son, Brian Keith Wells, by a granddaughter, Lydia Wells, by a sister, Brenda Edwards, and by 2 brothers, Steve and David Edwards.

Prior to his retirement because of illness, Mr. Edwards was employed with Temple-Inland in Rome for many years.  He was also the former owner and operator of Family Movers in Cave Spring.  Earlier in his years, he worked in the family business with his father and brothers, digging graves and foundations in the Northwest Georgia area.  He attended Park Avenue Baptist Church in Lindale.

Roger was a family man, their rock and their heart.  He loved his children and grandchildren more than life itself.  He felt so fortunate and blessed to have them all.  He loved his home, his land, his cows, his dogs, cruises, going to ballgames and special events.  He was a great friend and neighbor.  And he loved his wife.  No one could have had a better husband and friend.  He will be missed!

Survivors include his wife, the former Nancy Dempsey, to whom he was married on December 26, 1976; a daughter, Christy Edwards Gunn, and her fiancé, Donny Cox, Cave Spring; 2 sons, Stephen Dale Edwards, and his wife, Riannon, Cave Spring, and Rev. Brent Wells, and his wife, Amy, Silver Creek; his mother, Louise Tucker Edwards, Rome; 2 brothers, Jimmy Ray Edwards, and his wife, Vivian, Rome, and Michael Edwards, Cedartown; 2 sisters-in-law, Danette Edwards, Rome, and Jeaneen Edwards, and her husband, Dean, Cave Spring; a brother-in-law, Gerald Dempsey, and his wife, Tonya, Rome; 9 grandchildren, Avery Hall, Eli Wells, Neeleigh Edwards, Alli Hall, Sydney Wells, Connor John Edwards, Zane Edwards, Anna Grace Wells, and Caleb Wells; 2 step-grandchildren, Will and Weston Cox; nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2017, at 11am in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, with his son, the Rev. Brent Wells officiating.  Interment will follow in Cave Spring Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Wednesday evening from 5 until 7pm.  At other hours, they may be contacted at the residence.

The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers:  Stephen Edwards, Connor John Edwards, Zane Edwards, Avery Hall, Eli Wells, Donny Cox, Ronnie Smith, and Dean Edwards.

Ms. Lurlene Lowe, age 69, of 424 MLK Jr. Drive Adairsville, Ga. transitioned July 8, 2017. Services for Ms. Lurlene Lowe will be Saturday, July 15, 2017 at 1 p.m. at Adairsville Church Of God, 297 Old Dixie Hwy, Adairsville, Ga. 30103. Ms. Lowe will lie in repose from noon until the funeral hour. The family will receive friends on Friday, July 14, 2017 from 6-8 pm at Friendship Baptist Church in Adairsville, Ga..  Interment will follow the service at Poplar Springs Cemetery located in Adairsville.
