You could tell the changing of the seasons — retail at least — by drive by one longtime retailer in Rome. A continuing whirl of signs boasted of Halloween or Christmas or spring sales within the building.
But it’s the latest sign that has caught more than a few eyes.
Southern Interiors at 415 E. Second Ave. in Rome is closing but exactly when isn’t set as yet. The yellow-and-black display advertises 20 percent off the entire stock.
Owner Joyce Smith says the business has gotten to be “too much of a struggle” so the decision was made to begin closing it. Smith has owned the store for 12 years and adds the business has been open for 30 years.
As for closing, “we’re sort of playing it by ear,” she says.
The fate of her building also is unknown. It is in the historic district and is along one of the high-traffic routes in the city just north of Glenn Milner.
