Saturday is Earth Day but some key events today get a jump on the celebration (besides, everyday is Earth Day)

Renew Our Rivers to focus on Armuchee Creek this morning: Renew our Rivers gets under way soon, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m., beginning at New Armuchee Baptist Church, 5385 Martha Berry Highway for staging, breakfast and safety talk. Please wear boots and long pants. The area where the clean-up effort will concentrate on will be near the cemetery between Martha Berry (U.S. 27) and Old Summerville Road.  Says Mary Hardin Thornton: “Although we will not need boats for this effort, we will need trucks and some with a winch on the front to pull appliances, sofas, etc., out of the stream banks and steep ditches.” Also, Scenic Road is a road that gets a lot of litter.  There will be plenty of opportunities for people to help clean along the creek and on both sides of the highway.  Planned in addition to the clean-up: Breakfast (Evans’ store biscuits), lunch, T-shirts and door prizes. For more: 706-236-4456.

Also in Armuchee: The Heritage First Bank branch off Martha Berry is celebrating Earth Day with a special open house throughout the day.
