For its 60th anniversary, Rome Little Theatre would like to take you on a journey back to the 1950s. Join us for “Forever Plaid,” a musical full of barbershop quartet harmonies and pitch-perfect melodies at Rome’s DeSoto Theatre. Showtimes this weekend are Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. The show continues Aug. 26-28 with performances at 8 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Around 500 walkers and runners are expected for the 31st Annual Gary Tillman Memorial Clocktower 5K Road Race and 2-Mile Health Walk benefitting The Exchange Club Family Resource Center. The chip-timed 5K (USATF Certified Course) starts at 8 a.m. The race showcases Historic Downtown, Myrtle Hill and the challenging Clocktower Hill while the 2-Mile Health Walk follows a similar route, excluding the Clocktower Hill in favor of our scenic Riverwalk Path. Race day registration costs $35 for runners and $30 for walkers Registrations can be submitted online or form downloaded at www.tillmanclocktowerrace.org.
The 15th edition of the Health Initiative for Men, the free health fair and screenings, is now open to both men and women. The health fair is from 8 a.m. until noon at the Floyd County Health Department on East 12th Street. It is free for all and some participants will want to call ahead to scheduled a mobile mammography (706-509-6840, option 1). Those who are taking part in screenings should fast beginning at midnight the night before. Chick-fil-A biscuits and other snacks will be available following the quick test. The event is presented each year by the 100 Black Men of Rome with 2016 partners including Georgia Prostate Cancer Coalition, Redmond Regional, Floyd Medical, Public Health, University Gynecologic Oncology, the Rome Alumae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta and the NWGA Cancer Coalition.
