John McClellan’s High School predictions: Model stays hot; wins for Rome, Darlington, Calhoun, Cartersville

The Model Blue Devils and Calhoun Yellow Jackets picked up big wins on Friday night to remain undefeated for the year. Armuchee’s first win of the year was also a highlight of the weekend. Region 6-AAA begins region play this week as Adairsville, Calhoun, Gordon Central and Sonoraville begin the quest for state playoff berths. This is the biggest weekend of the year so far in 2014 as every area high school is in action.

RockmartCoosa (0-2) at Rockmart (1-1)Coosa - Copy

  • Series History: Rockmart leads 32-11-1
  • Last Meeting: Rockmart defeated Coosa 27-24 in overtime on September 6, 2013
  • The Coosa Eagles staged a second half comeback that fell short in a 21-13 loss to Cass, the second straight Class AAAAA school Coosa has faced. The Rockmart Yellow Jackets lost to Sonoraville 40-26 in a game that was not as close as the score indicates. Coosa wins by 10.

ModelModel (3-0) at Bremen (1-1)

  • Series History: Bremen leads 7-4-1
  • Last Meeting: Bremen defeated Model 18-6 on September 5, 2003
  • The Model Blue Devils took their season record to 3-0 with their biggest win of the season 33-14 over Christian Heritage. The Bremen Blue Devils had to go into double overtime before converting a field goal to edge Hapeville Charter 23-20. A win Friday night would give Model its first 4-0 start since the Blue Devils won six straight to begin the season in 1981. This is Model’s last non-region game of the year. Model wins by 6.

 

RomeCambridge (2-0) at Rome (0-1)

  • Series History: First Meeting
  • The Cambridge Bears were off this past Friday after posting a 42-12 win over Chapel Hill to stay undefeated for the 2014 season. The Rome Wolves, who opened the season with a 28-26 loss to Villa Rica, have not played since August 22 due to a bye week and a cancellation of Saturday night’s game at Newton due to lightning. This Friday night is homecoming at Rome High School with a large crowd expected at Barron Stadium. Rome wins by 10.

 

Darlington - CopyKings Ridge Christian (0-1) at Darlington (1-1)

  • Series History: Darlington leads 2-0
  • Last Meeting: Darlington defeated Kings Ridge 31-7 on September 20, 2013
  • The Kings Ridge Crusaders played their opening game Friday night and lost 31-28 to Walker. The Darlington Tigers exploded in the second half two weeks ago to overwhelm Bremen 40-20 before having this past weekend off. Darlington wins by 18.

armuchee - CopyArmuchee (1-2) at Fannin County (1-1)

  • Series History: First Meeting
  • The Armuchee Indians put up great effort on both sides of the ball and shut out Coahulla Creek 20-0.The Fannin County Rebels evened their record for the year with a 55-7 win over Murray County. Fannin County wins by 7.

Pepperell Chestatee (0-2) at Pepperell (0-2)

  • Series History: First Meeting
  • The Chestatee War Eagles have still not scored a point in 2014 after losing 31-0 to a good West Hall team. The Pepperell Dragons improved from the week before but finished on the short end of a 20-0 loss to Bowdon. Chestatee wins by 17.

  • Series History: NCCA leads 5-0
  • Last Meeting: NCCA defeated UCS 41-26 on August 30, 2013
  • The UCS Lions put up a good third quarter effort before losing at home 45-21 to Loganville Christian. The NCCA Crusaders are off to a disappointing 0-3 start after a 21-20 loss Friday night to Covenant Christian Academy. New Creation wins by 6.

 

Gordon CentralClass AAA Number 2 Calhoun (2-0) at Gordon Central (0-2)Calhoun - Copy

  • Series History: Calhoun leads 8-5-1
  • Last Meeting: Calhoun defeated Gordon Central 43-14 on October 14, 2011
  • The Calhoun Yellow Jackets showed how they are still the team to beat in northwest Georgia in a surprisingly one-sided 34-6 win over Carrollton. The Gordon Central Warriors lost 28-10 to Southeast Whitfield. This is the first region game for these two teams as Calhoun, who moves up to Class AAA, goes for its 14th consecutive region championship. Calhoun wins by more than 30.

Adairsville - CopyClass AAA Number 7 Ringgold (2-0) at Adairsville (2-0)

  • Series History: Tied 2-2
  • Last Meeting: Ringgold defeated Adairsville 38-20 on September 27, 2013
  • The Ringgold Tigers, who were off Friday night, defeated Heritage of Catoosa 44-23 two weeks ago. The Adairsville Tigers also are coming off a bye week after beating Woodland 52-28. This is an important game for these playoff favorites in Region 6-AAA. Ringgold wins by 12. 

SonoravilleSonoraville (1-1) at North Murray (1-1)

  • Series History: Sonoraville leads 3-1
  • Last Meeting: Sonoraville defeated North Murray 38-35 on September 27, 2013
  • The Sonoraville Phoenix opened up a dominating lead in a 40-26 win over Rockmart. The North Murray Mountaineers defeated Chattooga 42-22 to even their record at 1-1. North Murray wins by 2. 

Cartersville - CopyCartersville (1-1) at North Paulding (1-2)

  • Series History: First Meeting
  • The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes hung in strongly all night before losing 27-26 on the road to Class AAAAAA power North Cobb. The North Paulding Wolfpack dropped to a disappointing 1-2 after a 56-35 loss to Allatoona. Cartersville wins by 1.

 

TrionTrion (2-0) at LaFayette (2-0)

  • Series History: Trion leads 36-23
  • Last Meeting: Trion defeated LaFayette 35-14 on September 6, 2013
  • The Trion Bulldogs, who were off Friday night, are 2-0 after a 34-7 win two weeks ago to Armuchee. The LaFayette Ramblers are 2-0 for the first time since 2009 following a 43-22 win over Gordon Lee. Trion wins by 16. 

Cedartown - CopyCedartown (0-2) at Bowdon (1-1)

  • Series History: Cedartown leads 2-1
  • Last Meeting: Bowdon defeated Cedartown 7-6 on November 4, 1977
  • The Cedartown Bulldogs are 0-2 against a tough early schedule that resulted in a 37-20 loss Friday night at Northwest Whitfield. The Bowdon Red Devils recovered from an opening season loss to shut out Pepperell 20-0. Bowdon wins by 3. 

Cass - CopyForsyth Central (2-0) at Cass (1-1)

  • Series History: Tied 1-1
  • Last Meeting: Forsyth Central defeated Cass 28-0 on October 7, 2011
  • The Forsyth Central Bulldogs defeated Woodland 36-14 to get off to a start of 2-0 on the 2014 season. The Cass Colonels staved off a comeback attempt by Coosa to defeat the Eagles 21-13. Cass wins by 1. 

Woodland Bartow2Sprayberry (0-2) at Woodland (0-2)

  • Series History: First Meeting
  • The Sprayberry Yellow Jackets came close for the second week in a row in a 28-23 loss on August 29 to Kennesaw Mountain before entering their bye week. The Woodland Wildcats are a disappointing 0-2 after a 36-14 defeat by Forsyth Central. Sprayberry wins by 5. 

Chattooga Co. - CopyChattooga (0-2) at Fellowship Christian (1-1)

  • Series History: First Meeting
  • The Chattooga Indians lost 42-22 to North Murray to remain winless after two games. The Fellowship Christian Paladins, who are coming off their bye week, lost to Riverside Military 20-10 on August 29. Chattooga wins by 5.

  • Last Meeting: Louisiana School for the Deaf defeated Georgia School for the Deaf 44-12 on October 26, 2013
  • The Louisiana School for the Deaf War Eagles won a hard fought game Thursday night by defeating Mississippi School for the Deaf 20-16. The GSD Tigers have been off two straight weekends after losing 34-7 to Tennessee School for the Deaf in their August 23 season opener. Louisiana School for the Deaf wins by 12.
